The New Mexico Department of Justice is seeking a motivated law student to join our team as a Child Advocacy Fellow.  The selected candidate will support our efforts to identify areas of concern and ways to improve child welfare in New Mexico.

Location: Albuquerque
Duration: Temporary Summer Employment
Compensation: $29/hour (full-time, M-F, 8-5PM)

Responsibilities

  • Conducting legal research
  • Reviewing pertinent policies and practices of state child welfare agencies
  • Assisting with drafting of legal pleadings and briefs
  • Facilitating the presentation of legal arguments during judicial proceedings
  • Reviewing transcripts, audio recordings and other documentary material obtained by child welfare agencies
  • Synthesizing data and information to craft reports and recommendations to advance child welfare public policies.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Currently enrolled in law school. Ideally will have completed at least 1L year.

Skills:

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to succeed independently and/or in a team environment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
    Interest in child welfare, criminal law, and/or government accountability
