The NMDOJ seeks a high-performing, experienced litigation attorney to join its Impact Litigation Division. Our mission is to uphold the rule of law and protect vulnerable residents of New Mexico when they are unable to protect themselves. Our focus is on complex civil matters aligned with the Attorney General’s priorities, such as challenging unlawful federal actions relating to immigration, reproductive rights, environmental protection, privacy, and voting rights. We also pursue claims against social media companies and corporations that harm or exploit children and other consumers.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal counsel and representation in complex litigation cases involving significant legal and factual issues.
  • Collaborate with government agencies, departments, and officials to interpret and apply laws relevant to complex legal matters.
  • Initiate and oversee litigation and enforcement actions against individuals or entities violating state laws and regulations.
  • Develop and implement strategic litigation plans and case strategies to address complex legal challenges.
  • Conduct thorough legal research, draft pleadings, motions, and other legal documents.
  • Manage all stages of litigation, including discovery, trial, and appeals, ensuring alignment with the overall objectives of the New Mexico Department of Justice.
  • Collaborate with other attorneys, legal professionals, and external stakeholders to coordinate efforts and share information related to complex litigation.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior attorneys and staff within the division.
  • Represent the New Mexico Department of Justice in court and administrative proceedings.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the New Mexico state bar and in good standing or ability to acquire a limited law license.
  • 3 to 6 years of experience in complex litigation, with an emphasis on consumer protection, civil rights, or immigration law.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Proven track record of developing and executing successful complex litigation strategies.
  • Excellent leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a team of attorneys and legal professionals.
  • Outstanding legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equality, and public interest law.
