The New Mexico Department of Justice seeks a high-performing, experienced litigation attorney to join its Impact Litigation Division. Our mission is to uphold the rule of law and protect vulnerable residents of New Mexico who are unable to protect themselves. The team focuses on complex civil matters involving the priorities of the Attorney General, such as challenging unlawful federal actions related to immigration, reproductive rights, environmental protection, privacy, and voting rights. The division also pursues claims against social media companies and other large corporations that harm or exploit children and other consumers. The ideal candidate will have seven or more years of experience in complex litigation, with an emphasis on consumer protection, civil rights, or immigration law, and a commitment to working collaboratively in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal counsel and guidance on a range of civil litigation matters, including consumer protection, civil rights, and immigration law.
- Develop and execute litigation strategies to address unlawful federal actions and protect the rights of New Mexico residents.
- Initiate and oversee legal actions against entities that inflict harm on or exploit vulnerable populations, particularly children and consumers.
- Collaborate with the Attorney General, Chief Deputy Attorney General, and other legal professionals to prioritize and manage impactful litigation cases.
- Research and draft legal documents, including pleadings, motions, and briefs, to support litigation efforts.
- Conduct investigations and gather evidence to build strong cases in support of the division’s objectives.
- Represent the New Mexico Department of Justice in court, engaging in high-level advocacy to achieve favorable outcomes.
- Work with other government agencies, advocacy groups, and stakeholders to coordinate efforts and share information related to impact litigation.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Admission to the New Mexico state bar and in good standing, or the ability to acquire a limited law license.
- Seven or more years of experience in complex litigation, particularly in consumer protection, civil rights, or immigration law.
- Proven track record of developing and executing successful litigation strategies.
- Excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to thrive under pressure, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
