Why does the job exist?

This position exists to act as a victim and community advocate.

How does it get done?

The community service coordinator will accompany victims and sometimes witnesses to courtroom proceedings, meet with community members, and attend community events including mass casualty and disaster situations.  They will interface with prosecutors and law enforcement to litigation and operations.

Who are the customers?

The role is meant to ensure that victims of crimes, disasters and other situations are supported and provided with appropriate resources.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate has advocate experience dealing with victims of crimes, including children.  They understand basic courtroom procedures. They are able to assist Law Enforcement and have a knowledge of available victim resources. They have experience training others. They can adjust and navigate in high-pressure situations and diffuse high stress situations.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Guidance and Counseling, Education, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Criminology and/or Family Studies/Services and four (4) years of any combination of experience including working with communities, working on health or social service related matters, social work/case management experience, behavioral health and/or health care. • If Minimum Qualification requires a specific number of “semester hours” in a field (e.g. 6 semester hours in Accounting), applicants MUST have those semester hours in order to meet the minimum qualifications. No substitutions apply for semester hours.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment as some statewide travel maybe required. Employment is subject to criminal background check and is conditional pending results of criminal background check. Be of good moral character and not have been convicted of a felony offense by a court of this state, any other state or the United States.

Working Conditions

Office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting, including during public meetings and hearings. Must be able to lift 25 lbs, and some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Some occasional travel, including overnight travel, may be required in and out of state.
