Albuquerque, NM – This morning, Attorney General Hector Balderas announced that the New Mexico Supreme Court agreed with the Office of the Attorney General and affirmed the convictions of Juan Galindo for the horrific rape and death of his 1-month-old daughter in 2011. Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the South Valley home to find the bludgeoned, deceased infant wrapped tightly in a blood-soaked blanket. In 2015, Galindo was found guilty of child abuse resulting in death, two counts of child rape, and one charge of child abuse for putting his 13-year-old daughter in danger.
“This appalling act of evil against an infant is unspeakable, and after our office’s work, along with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and the Second Judicial District Attorney’s Office, this monster will remain in prison for the rest of his life,” said Attorney General Balderas.
In his appeal, the defendant argued that his convictions are not supported by evidence, his statements to police were involuntary, and that the court should not have allowed photos of the baby’s body and injuries at trial. The Supreme Court rejected the defendant’s claims and agreed with the positions of Assistant Attorney General Maris Veidemanis, who handled the appeal on behalf of the Office of the Attorney General.
