Santa Fe, NM – Today, Attorney General Hector Balderas released the following statement regarding former Secretary of State Dianna Duran’s sentencing hearing:

“The swift adjudication of this matter rectifies the public harm done by the criminal conduct of Ms. Duran and saved tremendous taxpayer impeachment resources. The Office of the Attorney General thoroughly investigated the case, which resulted in felony convictions and jail time.

With this matter coming to a close, this Office will continue to aggressively investigate and prosecute public corruption in New Mexico.”

Background:

Duran has already resigned from her duties as a public official, she must serve jail time, pay back $13,866.80 to individual campaign contributors from whom she embezzled, and pay $14,000 in penalty fines. Duran will receive court-ordered supervision to include GPS monitoring and counseling, as well as complete 2000 hours of community service and make 144 public appearances to high schools, colleges, and civic groups detailing her life, service, crimes, and the effect the crimes have had on Duran and the people of the State of New Mexico. Duran must publish six letters of apology throughout the State of New Mexico and write a letter of apology to the nine identified donors and personally deliver the letters.
