Santa Fe, NM – Today, Special Agents from the New Mexico Department of Justice arrested Leonard Romero at his residence in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Romero, a former teacher at Memorial Middle School, has not been employed at the institution since the sexual assault allegations emerged.
Romero is charged with five counts of Criminal Sexual Penetration of a Minor by School Employee, Child Solicitation by Electronic Communication Device (child 13-16) (appears for meet) and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor.
In January of 2022, the allegations of sex abuse came to light when a school employee overheard students discussing Romero having an inappropriate relationship with the child victim. The Las Vegas City Police Department began an investigation regarding the alleged sexual abuse done by a teacher employed at Memorial Middle School. The victim came forward and disclosed a statement of sexual abuse to a Detective with the Department. Several months later, the NMDOJ took over the investigation and have brought forward charges against Romero for this alleged abuse.
Romero has been booked and detained at the San Miguel County Detention Center.
