Protecting your child’s privacy and safety on Reddit is an important step to ensure they are safeguarded from potential cybercriminals and to ensure that they have a safe and positive experience on the forum. This guide will provide steps to properly configure your child’s privacy settings on Reddit. It’s encouraged to set these settings to be as private as possible and to do so with your child present to allow for open communication and questions.
Privacy Settings
Reddit can be accessed in a variety of ways with the most common being through an internet browser, such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, and dedicated applications for smartphones or tablets.
- Browser Settings:
- Go to www.reddit.com and log in to your child’s account.
- Click on the user icon at the top right corner of the screen.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- Locate and click on the Profile tab towards the top.
- Make sure the toggle for Mark as mature (18+) is off.
- Locate and click on the Privacy tab towards the top.
- Uncheck the toggles to prevent your child’s profile from being accessible to strangers through their search or messaging functions.
- Change the settings for Who can send you inbox messages and allow chat requests from to limit who can contact your child.
- Mobile App Settings:
- Open the Reddit app on your child’s smartphone or tablet and tap the user profile icon in the top right corner.
- Tap Settings.
- Select Account Settings.
- Under the Safety section, tap Chat and messaging permissions and change the settings to limit who can message your child.
- Go back to Account settings, turn off the toggles for the following:
- Allow people to follow you
- Show up in search results
- There are multiple toggle options under Sensitive Advertising Categories. We recommend going through these options with your child and choose what you think is appropriate for them.
- Go back to the Settings menu. Under View Options, turn off Show mature content (I’m over 18).
