Twitch is a platform that is used for live video game streaming and has become very popular with young users. While its primary function is an online gaming catalog in which users can download a game to play, it still has the same types of risks that are common with any digital platform. This guide will provide steps to properly configure your child’s privacy settings on Twitch. It’s encouraged to set these settings to be as private as possible and to do so with your child present to allow for open communication and questions.
Privacy Settings
Twitch requires users to be at least 13 years old. It’s essential to have open communication with your child about online safety and the importance of privacy settings.
- Sign into your child’s Twitch account.
- Select the profile icon in the bottom-left corner.
- Select Account Settings, then Security & Privacy.
- Make sure Enable additional account creation is toggled off.
- Tap Security and enable Two-Factor Authentication.
- Go back to Security & Privacy. Turn on the following toggles:
- Block Gifted Subs for Unfollowed Channels.
- Block Whispers from Strangers.
- Go through the next three options with your child to adjust how other people can interact with them:
- Story Mentions
- Story Clip Sharing
- Stories Resharing
- If your child uploads or streams on the platform, we suggest you turn off the last setting: Allow viewers to upload your clips to their socials.
- Go back to the Settings menu. Tap on Content Preferences. Choose to hide each of the settings. We recommend going through these options with your child so they understand why they are inappropriate.
On a computer, there are additional settings you can adjust if your child uploads or streams on the platform.
- To manage your child’s channel and video settings click on their profile icon on the top-right corner, then click on Video Producer.
- On the menu located on the left-hand side of the screen, click on Settings, then Stream. Disable Store Past Broadcasts to prevent old streams from being accessed in the future.
- Go back to Settings on the left-hand sidebar and select Moderation to adjust your child’s chat settings for their channel. You can also adjust Auto Mod to set the level to 4, which will maximize content filtering in chats.
