Protecting your child’s privacy and safety on Reddit is an important step to ensure they are safeguarded from potential cybercriminals and to ensure that they have a safe and positive experience on the forum. This guide will provide steps to properly configure your child’s privacy settings on Reddit. It’s encouraged to set these settings to be as private as possible and to do so with your child present to allow for open communication and questions.
Privacy Settings
Reddit can be accessed in a variety of ways with the most common being through an internet browser, such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, and dedicated applications for smartphones or tablets.
- Browser Settings:
- Go to www.reddit.com and log in to your child’s account.
- Click on the user icon at the top right corner of the screen.
- Select User Settings from the drop-down menu.
- Here, you’ll find a row of tabs (e.g., Account, Profile, Safety & Privacy, etc.). Each of these tabs offers various settings related to who can contact your child and what types of forums your child can or cannot join.
- Mobile App Settings:
- Open the Reddit app on your child’s smartphone or tablet and tap the user profile icon in the top right corner.
- Tap Settings.
- Select Account Settings (typically the first option in the menu).
- Here you can adjust overall account settings such as community filters, notifications, and messaging capabilities.
- You can now manage the users who can message your child’s Reddit account. Note that moderators and administrators of subreddits your child follows will still be able to send them private messages. This is why it’s important to decide which subreddits your child can follow and which you should disallow. Make sure to click Save at the bottom of the screen to save your configurations.
